Apple has confirmed that the nano-texture protective layer on the iPhone Duo’s foldable inner display is replaceable. As Kate Bergeron, Apple’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering, revealed in an interview with creator Angelica Siciliani Fendi, the delicate film can be peeled off and replaced with a new protective layer if damaged or worn out.
Protective Layer Conceals Crease and Absorbs Wear
On foldable smartphones, the factory-installed film plays a crucial role: It protects the flexible panel from damage and, according to Bergeron, conceals the manufacturing-related crease down the middle of the screen. While Apple invested heavily in engineering to maximize durability, folding mechanisms and their protective layers are naturally subject to everyday mechanical stress. That this component can now be officially replaced marks a major step forward for foldable repairability, as already noted in the first iPhone Duo hands-on.

Pricing and Display Service Procedure
In the US, Apple already lists the nano-texture protective layer replacement at $19 for customers with AppleCare+ coverage. How much the repair costs without additional insurance is currently unknown. Apple has also not yet announced official euro pricing for the German market.
Officially, replacing the iPhone Duo’s protective layer will likely remain restricted to Apple Stores and authorized Apple service providers. Whether customers will eventually be able to remove and replace the layer themselves with ease remains to be seen. Users should therefore under no circumstances attempt to peel off the film by force on their own.
Release in October
Anyone interested in the new device class—for which Apple designers recently explained the folding concept in detail—can mark their calendars: Order preparations open on October 12, 2026, with pre-orders kicking off on Friday, October 16 at 2:00 PM. The official launch and deliveries will begin on October 23, 2026.
