Aqara Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400: New mmWave Presence Sensor Launches in Germany

Aqara has launched its new Spatial Multi-Sensor FP400 on the German market. Priced at €79.99, the sensor can detect not only motion and presence, but also room occupancy, allowing these metrics to be used in automations.

Under the hood, the FP400 relies on a new generation of 60 GHz mmWave radar. This is designed to deliver precise real-time tracking, multi-person detection, and the ability to count up to ten people simultaneously.

Zone Tracking and Interference Source Detection

The sensor features a 120-degree field of view and covers a maximum area of 10 by 8 meters (around 80 square meters). For automations, users can leverage not just general presence in a room, but exact positioning—such as turning on specific lights only when someone sits on the couch.

To reduce false triggers caused by pets, air currents, or robot vacuums, Aqara incorporates AI-backed software. The system assists during initial setup by automatically identifying room boundaries and sources of interference, then suggesting zones accordingly. The unit can be mounted on either the ceiling or the wall and is powered via a USB-C port.

Wireless Protocols: Zigbee and Thread

Unlike the FP2, which relied on Wi-Fi, the FP400 supports both Zigbee and Thread as wireless standards. When using Zigbee paired with an Aqara hub, Matter (over Bridge) is supported; otherwise, Matter (over Thread) works via a standard Thread border router. Through Matter, various smart home ecosystems can be connected, including Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, Home Assistant, Homey, and SmartThings.

When operating over Thread, however, the sensor currently functions solely as a presence sensor while also reporting ambient light levels.

With its 60 GHz radar, spatial mapping, and flexible mounting options, the FP400 marks an evolution over earlier presence sensors. When deciding on a wireless protocol, however, buyers should keep in mind that Thread mode is currently limited to basic presence and illuminance sensing.
