Shenzhen/Aachen – Smart home specialist Sonoff has announced the official sales launch of its new “Orb” product line. The series comprises smart wall sockets, light switches and roller-shutter controls that rely primarily on the new industry standard Matter. The components are available in European retail effective immediately.
With the “Orb” series, Sonoff is taking an important strategic step away from proprietary solutions and toward universal connectivity. Thanks to the integration of Matter over WiFi, the devices can for the first time be added directly to the major ecosystems of Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Samsung SmartThings without any manufacturer-specific bridges.
The line-up: From socket to roller shutter
The new product family covers the most important areas of home automation and is available now via platforms such as Amazon. The core products include:
- SONOFF Orb Socket (Schuko): A smart flush-mounted wall socket rated for loads of up to 16A (4000W).
- SONOFF Orb-DIM: A Matter-capable dimmer switch for stepless control of dimmable bulbs.
- SONOFF Fusion Series Orb-RBS: A specialized wall switch for electric roller shutters that enables precise calibration and positioning.
Matter integration with minor limitations
Although Matter certification promises smooth communication between devices from different manufacturers, in practice there are still some technical hurdles at present. The manufacturer points out, for example, that the energy monitoring feature of the Orb socket cannot currently be read out via the standard interfaces of the Matter providers (such as Apple Home). Anyone who wants to track power consumption in detail must, for now, continue to rely on the in-house eWeLink app.
An important note for installation: The WiFi-based switches of the Orb series require the presence of a neutral wire in the flush-mounted box as a mandatory condition for operation.
Flexibility for pros: New Zigbee options
Alongside the WiFi fleet, Sonoff is also expanding its offering for users of local smart home hubs. Newly available are various Zigbee switches, offered in variants both with and without a neutral wire.
These are particularly suited to users who run systems such as Home Assistant (via ZHA or Zigbee2MQTT). Here, too, a dedicated actuator for roller-shutter control is available, providing a stable and energy-efficient wireless connection.
Context: Matter as the standard in 2026
The launch of the Orb series underlines the maturity of the Matter standard in 2026. Whereas smart home components often used to require complicated setups, the Orb line now enables “out-of-the-box” compatibility over the existing 2.4 GHz WiFi network. For end consumers, this means above all investment security and a free choice of the control app they use.
