The popular smart-home firmware ESPHome has had a first official starter kit since 12 August 2026. Developed by Apollo Automation in partnership with the Open Home Foundation, the kit is aimed squarely at beginners – with no soldering and no YAML knowledge required.
What’s inside
At its heart is a board with the ESP32-C6-MINI-1 wireless module, which supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (Wi-Fi 6), Bluetooth LE and Thread/Zigbee. Two connectors let you attach four included modules: a PIR motion sensor, a temperature and humidity sensor, a module with a button and buzzer, and ten RGB LEDs.
Usable with no prior knowledge
- No soldering: modules snap off a panel and connect via a flat ribbon cable.
- No YAML: configuration is done visually in the ESPHome Device Builder.
- Local: everything runs without cloud, subscription or account.
The kit can run standalone or be connected to a Home Assistant server. This significantly lowers the barrier to entry for your own privacy-friendly smart-home projects – from a motion detector to environmental monitoring. For tinkerers previously put off by breadboards and soldering irons, it is a practical starting point.
