Valve released SteamVR 2.17 to all users on 11 September 2026 – its first major update since version 2.16 in June, and a clear sign that the SteamOS-based Steam Frame headset is close to launch.
More Steam features inside VR
The update pulls more of Steam into virtual reality: achievements, community guides and notes can now be accessed directly from the headset. A new Quick Access menu on the VR dashboard surfaces notifications, volume, brightness and battery status, while an added slider controls environment and camera brightness. Overlays can also be positioned more precisely and closed straight from the dashboard.
Targeted Linux and Steam Link fixes
For Linux gamers, the standout change is improved wired-headset support, which previously relied on third-party layers. Valve also cites better stability, improved error logging and a fixed crash when Steam Link encountered invalid textures. Steam Link itself gains smoother streaming over slow connections, NVIDIA stutter fixes and initial USB streaming support.
Ready for the Steam Frame
The timing is no coincidence: the release is widely seen as groundwork for the retail launch of the Steam Frame, Valve’s standalone VR headset running on SteamOS. Valve still has not confirmed a date – GamingOnLinux answers the launch question only with a dry „Any day now right?“. Either way, the update is already a win for the growing Linux gaming base.
