Mesa 26.3: Faster Intel Graphics in Steam Play

Linux gamers with Intel graphics can look forward to more performance: a performance gain has landed in the development of Mesa 26.3. In Windows games via Valve’s Steam Play with DXVK, the open-source Intel ANV driver gains up to around 5 percent.

This is made possible by enabling buffer compression for the Intel ANV driver with DXVK (Direct3D 8 to 11 over Vulkan) – previously this optimisation was only active for VKD3D (Direct3D 12).

Concrete figures

  • Intel Arc Battlemage: +5.26 % in “Shadow of the Tomb Raider”, +4.6 % in “Total War: Warhammer 3”.
  • Panther Lake (Xe3): +4.8 % in “Shadow of the Tomb Raider”, Total War titles around 2 %.

An important note: the change is slated for Mesa 26.3, which only debuts as a stable release in November. Those who don’t want to wait can already get the improvement from Mesa Git. A nice, free performance boost for Intel graphics on Linux.
