The frame-generation technology known from Windows as Lossless Scaling now runs markedly smoother on Linux: lsfg-vk 2.0 landed on 5 September 2026 with an entirely new pipeline that the developer says can triple to quadruple frame rates on handhelds such as the Steam Deck.
What lsfg-vk does
lsfg-vk is a Vulkan layer that brings the interpolation engine (LSFG) from the Windows Lossless Scaling app to Linux and SteamOS. Users still need to own the app on Steam and switch to its “lsfg-vk” branch. The tool then injects generated intermediate frames into nearly any game, lifting perceived smoothness – especially where handheld hardware runs out of headroom.
What is new in version 2.0
- A new bindless pipeline with FP16 acceleration: two to three times faster than before on hardware with a 2:1 FP16 ratio – many AMD laptops and handhelds – with no loss in image quality.
- Memory use cut to roughly 30 percent of the previous version, which the developer says beats even the Windows build.
- The Vulkan requirement drops from 1.3 to 1.2, so it runs on practically every Vulkan-capable GPU ever made.
- A new Qt6 interface replaces the GTK one, the download shrinks from 70 MB to a few kilobytes, and a new CLI tool handles benchmarks and system checks.
Who should care
Developer PancakeTAS reports gains of about 3 to 4x on the Steam Deck, around 3.5x on a Radeon 680M laptop and roughly 34 percent on a desktop RTX 5080. The caveat stands: frame generation creates no real frames, can add input latency and does not suit every genre. The project has also moved off GitHub and changed its license over AI-generated forks. Installation is via Flatpak or building from source.
