Swiss privacy provider Proton has shared new details on the development of its encrypted cloud storage, Proton Drive. For the second half of 2026, the company is announcing full-text search, a reworked sync engine for macOS and an official Linux beta, among other things.
Search and Platform Updates
Search is set to move beyond filenames: despite end-to-end encryption, Proton plans to offer full-text search across file contents on all platforms. For macOS, Proton is rebuilding the cross-platform sync engine that was previously Windows-only; users will then be able to select arbitrary folders for synchronization.
iOS, Google Migration and Linux
On the iPhone, the previously removed integration into Apple’s Files app returns later this year; to make that possible, the crypto runtime was switched entirely from Go to Rust to resolve storage issues. A new transfer tool aims to enable migration from Google Drive without the detour via Google Takeout and to handle large datasets. For Linux, an official beta is planned for 2026, initially as a background service for folder synchronization; a graphical client is slated for 2027.

Behind the scenes, Proton is optimizing the web editors for Docs and Sheets for shorter load times and fewer errors. The SDK is approaching version 1.0, and the Crypto Update 2.0 is due in 2027, with individual components rolling out in the coming months.
