Proton Experimental Update Fixes GTA III, Far Cry 4 and Proton 11 Regressions

On 4 September 2026 Valve shipped a fresh Proton Experimental update that reverses several regressions introduced by Proton 11 and makes a number of Windows games playable again on Linux, SteamOS and the Steam Deck.

The games that benefit

The focus is on undoing recently introduced breakage: Lunacid: Tears of the Moon and Ligo run again, and RaceRoom Racing Experience once more loads its HUD during races. On top of that come targeted single-game fixes: the controller now works reliably in Far Cry 4, the intro videos of Grand Theft Auto III play again, and minor graphics and font glitches in The I of the Dragon and Achron are gone. Cool People Club is newly listed as playable.

Why the Experimental branch matters

Proton Experimental is the testing channel through which Valve rolls out new fixes first, before they flow into the stable Proton releases. Especially after the jump to Proton 11, corrections pile up here for titles that had temporarily stopped launching. Steam Deck and SteamOS users can enable Experimental as needed in each game’s compatibility settings.

The bigger picture

The update is small but typical of Valve’s cadence of steady, incremental polish. It shows that the Proton 11 transition is still being fine-tuned and that Linux gaming thrives on this constant stream of fixes.
