Yeelight has unveiled the Smart Ceiling Light S1 in China – the company’s first lamp with support for Matter over Thread. Going forward, the manufacturer relies on the Thread standard instead of WiFi.
The Technical Specs
The ceiling light measures 320 millimeters in diameter, draws 23 watts and reaches a brightness of 1,900 lumens. Alongside the main downward-facing light, colored LEDs provide indirect illumination of the ceiling.
Matter over Thread Instead of WiFi
Instead of the previous WiFi protocol, the S1 uses the Matter over Thread standard. Devices communicate through a Matter hub via Thread, which eases the load on the home network. Thread Border Routers from various manufacturers can serve here, such as the Google Nest Hub or the Google TV Streamer.
Availability Still Open
The S1 is part of a larger Matter-compatible series; a retailer in Hong Kong lists eight additional products, including LED strips and smart bulbs for ceiling fans. In Germany, Yeelight is currently selling off its remaining WiFi models. Official prices and a possible European launch are not yet known.
