Gemini Skills: Google Replaces Gems With Flexible Chat Commands

Google has begun rolling out its new Skills feature globally for its AI assistant, Gemini. The update replaces the previous Gems system and allows users to integrate reusable prompt instructions directly into ongoing conversations. The change is available immediately for personal accounts and will soon reach business customers as well.

Invoking Reusable Commands Directly Within Dialogs

Skills serve as repositories for recurring instructions and parameters. Users can trigger these commands within a chat using the slash key (/); reports suggest that Google plans to switch to the @ symbol in the future. A key advantage over the predecessor is flexibility: Skills can be linked to additional files such as text documents, PDFs, or images. In addition, users can combine multiple different Skills within a single conversation.

Gemini can also independently generate templates from previous chat histories or suggest suitable options based on given prompts. Google highlights primary use cases such as preparing presentations, adapting specific writing styles, or analyzing topics from multiple perspectives. While Google also integrates AI services into hardware—such as the Google Home Speaker with Gemini—Skills focus squarely on direct text and document workflows.

Rollout Schedule for Personal Users and Workspace

The feature is available to personal Google account holders aged 18 and older, including users of the free Gemini version. For Google Workspace customers (Business, Enterprise, Education, and Nonprofits), the rollout will occur in phases:

  • October 5–12, 2026: Rapid Release rollout for Workspace.
  • October 13, 2026: Rollout in the Gemini mobile app.
  • October 19 to mid-November 2026: Rollout for organizations on Scheduled Release.

Skills are currently not synchronized between the Gemini mobile app and the Workspace environment, meaning they must be managed separately in each. In Workspace Studio, creating new “Ask a Gem” steps is no longer supported.

Gems Migration and Technical Limitations

Existing Gems are being phased out gradually and will be migrated automatically. For personal accounts, Gems will move to settings on November 17, 2026, where they will appear as Skill drafts. Support for personal Gems will end entirely in November 2026, coinciding with the sunset of the Google Opal experiment. Longer transition periods apply to enterprise customers: Workspace Business and Enterprise will support Gems until at least March 1, 2027, while the education sector has support through at least June 1, 2027.

Under the hood, Skills use the Markdown standard SKILL.md. Users can create an unlimited number of templates, though a maximum of 100 Skills can be active simultaneously. Having the “Keep Activity” history setting enabled is required. Specialized features such as Canvas, Deep Research, Guided Learning, and video or music generation tools are not integrated for now. GitHub content is also excluded from migration. Additionally, because the minimum age requirement has increased to 18 (up from 13), minors will lose access to this automation feature.
