Cloudflare OS: Open Platform for AI Agents

On 5 August 2026, Cloudflare open-sourced “Cloudflare OS” under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. The platform aims to give enterprises a secure, governed way to deploy AI agents, connected applications and automated workflows across internal systems.

Three building blocks

Cloudflare OS combines a workspace for AI agents, a security and governance layer, and a platform for building modifiable full-stack applications. In concrete terms, two core ideas are at the center:

  • Agent workspace with an isolated runtime: an environment grounded in an organisation’s context and “skills” that gives agents a sandboxed runtime to write and execute code.
  • Security and governance: built-in safeguards and access controls to safely connect agents to internal data and services.

Origin and availability

The platform is built on Cloudflare Workers and was created in part by Kenton Varda – as a spiritual successor to his earlier Sandstorm.io project. Cloudflare had already rolled out an early version internally in May, giving staff across technical and non-technical teams their own agent workspaces. The source code is on GitHub, and a live instance runs at os.cloudflare.app.
