The Chinese AI provider Z.ai (Zhipu) has released GLM-5.2, a powerful open model under the free MIT license – tailored for long, autonomous programming and engineering tasks.
Open and strong at code
GLM-5.2 is a mixture-of-experts model with 753 billion parameters (around 40 billion active per token). Under the MIT license it can be freely downloaded from Hugging Face, modified, and run locally or on your own servers. According to a report by VentureBeat, it beats proprietary models on several long-horizon coding benchmarks – and at a fraction of the cost.
Open-weight on the rise
GLM-5.2 joins a wave of strong open models – alongside Alibaba’s Qwen and the DeepSeek models. For many tasks, from coding and reasoning to local operation without a cloud API, open models are now serious alternatives to the big closed providers.
