OpenAI is heading toward an IPO – but probably no longer in September. CFO Sarah Friar told employees the company would go public “in 2027 or sooner”.
The timeline
Back in June, OpenAI confidentially filed an S-1 prospectus with the US securities regulator, the SEC. The company has not yet named a fixed date. September 2026 was originally floated as a possible timing; the CFO’s latest comments now push the window toward 2027.
Billions even before the IPO
In August, OpenAI completed a secondary share sale of around 7 billion dollars, letting current and former employees sell stock – at a company valuation of 852 billion dollars. Rival Anthropic is also preparing an IPO; the two firms are racing toward the public markets.
