While Discord is betting on cryptographic proofs delivered through digital wallets, platforms such as Google and OpenAI are turning to artificial intelligence for behavior analysis. The debate over protecting minors is thus increasingly becoming a fundamental question about global data privacy and the surveillance of all internet users.

Driven by regulatory pressure at home and abroad, the classic, easily circumvented self-declaration is giving way to complex technical procedures. Lawmakers Put Platforms on the Hook
The backdrop to this accelerated development is a noticeable tightening of legislation, especially in the United States. Legislative initiatives such as the App Store Accountability Act and the Parents Over Platforms Act aim to shift legal responsibility for youth protection away from individual website operators and directly onto the major platform and store operators such as Apple or Google.
To get ahead of looming lawsuits and hefty fines, the tech companies are already putting preventive control mechanisms in place. Whoever is liable protects themselves, and does so as comprehensively as possible.
