Meta is working on an overhaul of WhatsApp’s user interface on Android, giving its in-house AI assistant, Meta AI, an even more central role. In developmental version 2.26.38.10 for the Google operating system, a redesigned main navigation bar was spotted that provides the chatbot with a dedicated tab.
New Design for the Navigation Bar
The bottom navigation bar being tested features a revamped look: it is designed as a floating, pill-shaped element with rounded corners. Visually, the design takes cues from the app’s iOS version and appears more translucent, though it avoids the heavily pronounced blur effect found on Apple’s platform. Adjustments are planned for both light and dark modes.
Until now, Meta AI has often appeared as a floating action button in the mobile interface. Moving forward, the service is slated to be integrated directly into the menu bar as its own tab. By default, the bar includes sections such as Chats, Communities, Updates, and Calls. Which tab will make way for the AI has not yet been finalized: in the current preview build, Meta AI occasionally appears in two places at once. Reports suggest that the “Communities” tab might lose its permanent spot. In earlier test builds, WhatsApp also experimented with a dedicated Contacts tab, which could further affect the layout.
Availability and Regional Differences
Following the gradual rollout where Meta AI was integrated into WhatsApp, this latest step underscores the company’s push to deeply embed generative tools into everyday user workflows. However, the feature is not yet broadly enabled for participants in beta 2.26.38.10. There is no official release date for general users yet, and a public rollout could still be several weeks away.
Additionally, the availability of Meta AI varies by country and user account. As a result, the menu bar might be structured differently in regions with restricted access to the AI compared to countries with full support.
What Users Can Do Now
For now, there is no action required from users. The design is still under active development and may change before the final release. Those looking to test new features early can sign up for the official WhatsApp Google Play beta program. Standard users will need to wait for the update to roll out via the Play Store.
