WhatsApp is adjusting its system requirements for Apple devices on November 30, 2026, and will require at least iOS 15.5 going forward. Anyone wishing to continue using the messaging service on older iPhones or iPads must update their operating system ahead of the deadline to avoid losing access to the app.
Affected iPhone and iPad Models
Previously, the minimum threshold for using the application was iOS 15.1. This upcoming increase primarily affects older Apple devices, including the iPhone 6s, the iPhone 6s Plus, the first-generation iPhone SE, as well as the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The service is also updating requirements for tablets: a minimum requirement of iPadOS 15.5 will apply to the iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 4.
Users whose devices are compatible but still running an operating system version between iOS 15.1 and 15.4 must take action as well. Anyone who does not install an update by the end of November will lose access to the messenger.
No Need to Replace Older Devices
Unlike previous adjustments, the new requirement does not spell the end of the line for the affected devices. In 2025, WhatsApp raised the minimum requirement to iOS 15.1, which completely cut off models such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as they were no longer eligible for newer software versions.
However, the devices affected this time—from the iPhone 6s to the iPad mini 4—can all be updated to iOS 15.8.8 or iPadOS 15.8.8. Purchasing a new device is therefore not required to keep using the messenger.
What Owners of Older Devices Should Do Now
Affected users should check which software version is currently installed by going to General > About in their Apple device’s system settings. If a version older than iOS 15.5 is listed, the update should be installed well ahead of November 30, 2026, via General > Software Update to prevent any disruptions to WhatsApp service.
