With the unveiling of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, Apple has revamped the fast-charging capabilities of its smartwatches. To take advantage of these higher charging speeds, however, users must rely on new charging accessories: instead of the previous 5-watt hardware, the company now relies on up to 10 watts of power delivery.
New Charging Puck Delivers Up to 10 Watts
The 5-watt charging puck introduced alongside the Apple Watch Series 7 is no longer sufficient for the enhanced charging performance. The new charging cable delivers up to 10 watts via a proprietary protocol to the smartwatch. Reaching the faster speeds also requires a power adapter with at least 10 watts of output, though Apple continues to recommend 20-watt adapters. The compatible cable is included in the box with the new watches. Sold separately, Apple charges 29 euros for the replacement cable.
Impact on Existing Charging Stations
For buyers, this transition introduces practical hurdles across the accessory ecosystem. Existing charging docks, nightstand stations, and multi-device chargers from third-party manufacturers that feature integrated, older-generation Apple Watch charging pucks will not support the new peak charging speeds. Based on past experience, it will likely take several months before accessory makers release updated charging stations featuring full 10-watt support.
Faster Boost Only in the Early Stages
Doubling the maximum charging power does not shorten the overall time needed for a full charge; instead, it primarily takes effect during the first 15 minutes. According to Apple, the watches gain around 50 percent more battery life during this initial window compared to their predecessors:
- Apple Watch Series 12: A 15-minute charge delivers up to 12 hours of use (around a 50 percent charge level), whereas the predecessor Series 11 stored enough energy for 8 hours over the same duration.
- Apple Watch Ultra 4: A 15-minute charge provides up to 18 hours of battery life (around a 36 percent charge level), compared to 12 hours on the Ultra 3.
The total time required to reach 80 percent remains unchanged: the Series 12 still takes 30 minutes, while the Ultra 4 needs 45 minutes. The charging curve flattens quickly to protect the battery cells from excessive heat generation and premature wear.
Practical Tip for Users
Anyone upgrading to a Series 12 or Ultra 4 should primarily use the included charging cable and pair it with a sufficiently powerful power adapter, whether on the go or at the nightstand. Older charging accessories and legacy cables remain incompatible with the new charging speeds.
