On 11 August 2026, OpenAI released a preview version of its ChatGPT desktop app for Linux. This brings ChatGPT – including ChatGPT Work and the coding assistant Codex – natively to Linux. According to the company, Linux was one of the most frequently requested platforms.
Native packages for the major distributions
The app ships as native .deb and .rpm packages and supports the desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44 – each on x64 and ARM64. With this, ChatGPT as a desktop application now reaches all major operating systems.
Still a preview
An important caveat: this is a preview for now, and early reviews are mixed. Even so, the move is a clear signal that Linux as a desktop platform is increasingly being taken seriously by major providers – after native apps from the likes of NVIDIA, now also from OpenAI.
