Owners of older graphics cards should check their systems promptly: In late September, Nvidia released an important driver update for older GPU generations to address several security vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, graphics card manufacturer Sapphire is rolling out new firmware for select AMD Radeon models to resolve security issues as well.
Nvidia: Driver 582.78 Patches Security Vulnerabilities
Since October 2025, Nvidia no longer provides regular Game Ready Drivers for GPUs based on the Maxwell, Pascal, and Volta architectures. Consequently, these hardware generations no longer receive new game optimizations. However, the manufacturer guarantees security updates for critical vulnerabilities until October 2028.
With the GeForce Security Update Driver version 582.78 for Windows 10 and Windows 11, the company is responding to several known security advisories. Most of the patched vulnerabilities are classified with a “high” severity rating in the relevant security bulletins. A bug rated as critical also affects the Virtual GPU Manager (vGPU) on Linux, though it does not directly impact the regular Windows display driver.
The update to version 582.78 is available for the following graphics card series and models:
- GeForce 1000: GTX 1080 Ti, GTX 1080, GTX 1070 Ti, GTX 1070, GTX 1060, GTX 1050 Ti, GTX 1050, GT 1030, GT 1010
- GeForce 900: GTX 980 Ti, GTX 980, GTX 970, GTX 960, GTX 950
- GeForce 700: GTX 750 Ti, GTX 750, GTX 745
- Nvidia Titan: TITAN V, TITAN Xp, TITAN X (Pascal), GeForce GTX TITAN X
Sapphire Rolls Out New vBIOS for AMD Radeon RX 7000
In the Radeon camp, the situation is different. As far as currently known, the issue affects graphics cards from board partner Sapphire. The company is distributing an update for the video BIOS (vBIOS)—the foundational firmware of the graphics card responsible for low-level hardware control. According to the manufacturer, this update is intended to resolve an unspecified vulnerability discovered in collaboration with AMD.
Downloads are available on Sapphire’s support website for several models based on the RDNA 3 architecture:
- Radeon RX 7600, RX 7600 XT, RX 7650 GRE
- Radeon RX 7700 XT, RX 7800 XT
- Radeon RX 7900 GRE, RX 7900 XT, RX 7900 XTX
Whether models from other graphics card manufacturers will also require updates in the future, and how urgent the patch is in each specific case, remains unclear.
What Users Should Do Now
Nvidia users with the affected models should install security driver 582.78 promptly. This can be done easily by downloading the Windows installer and minimizes the risk posed by known system vulnerabilities.
Those running an affected Sapphire graphics card in their PC need to exercise more caution: flashing firmware carries technical risks. Sapphire requires an installed AMD Adrenalin driver to apply the update. An official guide details the process, which can take between 15 and 20 minutes. Under no circumstances should the computer’s power supply be interrupted during the entire process, as this could render the graphics card unusable.
