Canon has announced the EOS R8 Mark II. The mirrorless full-frame camera succeeds the EOS R8 and is aimed at ambitious photographers, videographers, travel enthusiasts, and content creators. The new model brings more than 60 improvements, including in-body image stabilization (IBIS) that compensates for shake directly at the sensor, making handheld shooting in low light much easier.
Faster Burst Speeds and AI-Powered Tracking
Inside the camera sits a 24.2-megapixel CMOS sensor paired with the DIGIC X image processor. The second-generation autofocus system utilizes AI-based subject detection to acquire and continuously track people, animals, and vehicles. According to the manufacturer, the autofocus achieves precise focus even in challenging lighting conditions down to -7.5 EV.
For dynamic scenes, the camera enables continuous shooting at up to 40 frames per second in RAW format—including full autofocus tracking. A pre-capture feature buffers images 0.5 seconds before the shutter button is fully pressed to help catch fleeting moments. Light sensitivity covers a range from ISO 100 to 102,400.
Video Features and Redesigned Body
On the video front, the EOS R8 Mark II delivers 4K footage at up to 60 frames per second, oversampled from 6K sensor data for enhanced detail rendition. Slow-motion recording is available in Full HD at up to 180 frames per second. A new defocus feature deliberately softens scenes, functioning as a creative transition tool. For vloggers and creators, 16 picture looks are integrated—including new profiles for slide and negative film—along with a product demo mode and a smooth skin mode.
Featuring more angular lines, the body design takes cues from classic 1980s Canon cameras such as the T80. Handling is improved through a deeper handgrip and a multi-controller joystick on the rear. Wirelessly, the camera connects via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. A USB-C port is available for fast data transfer and live streaming; professional users in this body class will have to do without a dedicated Ethernet port for wired networks.
Pricing and Availability
As Heise Online reports, the Canon EOS R8 Mark II is scheduled to hit retail shelves on October 20, 2026. The body-only version starts at a suggested retail price of 1,800 euros. Bundled as a kit with the RF 24-105mm F4-7.1 IS STM zoom lens, the price is 2,200 euros.
