Discount supermarket chain Lidl and Swedish freight technology company Einride have announced a joint pilot project for German road freight transport. The partnership centers on the deployment of fully autonomous, electric trucks to supply retail stores. Both partners presented the initiative at the IAA Transportation trade fair in Hanover.
Driverless Electric Trucks in Field Trials
What makes the project unique is the design of the vehicles: they are cabless electric trucks. Because these vehicles are engineered without a traditional driver’s cab, there is no space for a human driver on board. Steering and navigation are handled autonomously via Einride’s onboard systems and software platform in compliance with SAE Level 4.
The project aims to test autonomous store deliveries under real-world traffic and operating conditions on German roads. In Edermünde near Kassel (Hesse), the truck operates in live delivery service along a roughly 400-meter stretch of public road between a distribution center and a store, transporting dry goods.
Significance for the Logistics and Transport Sector
For retail and logistics, this trial marks a notable step forward. Using electric commercial vehicles cuts local emissions during transport between distribution hubs and retail locations. Eliminating the driver’s cab also allows vehicles to be designed specifically around cargo capacity and aerodynamic efficiency.
At the same time, operating without onboard personnel places high demands on regulatory approvals and system reliability. Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, KBA) granted the necessary permit for the designated operational area. The test run is initially scheduled for a four-month project phase. The vehicle is restricted to a maximum speed of 25 km/h, monitored remotely from a control tower, and accompanied locally by staff in a separate escort vehicle.
What Does This Mean for Consumers?
For everyday shoppers, nothing changes during their grocery run for now. Road users near the participating site in Edermünde may encounter the unusual, cabless vehicle on public streets. The project serves as a proving ground to assess the viability and safety of driverless heavy-duty transport in routine logistics operations.
