Apple unveiled the AirPods 5 on 9 September 2026, making Active Noise Cancellation standard on its open-ear earbuds for the first time. Pre-orders are open now, with the on-sale date set for 18 September.
What’s new in the AirPods 5
According to Apple, a new multiport acoustic architecture paired with the H2 chip removes up to 50 percent more ambient noise than the AirPods 4 with ANC. The buds also add a next-generation Adaptive EQ, a more natural Transparency mode and IP57 resistance to dust, sweat and water. Live Translation via Apple Intelligence and hands-free Siri round out the package.
Two versions, two prices
Apple sells the AirPods 5 in two configurations. The base model with a USB-C charging case costs $129 in the US (149 euros in Germany) and lasts up to four hours with ANC. The pricier option adds Qi wireless charging, a volume swipe gesture on the stem and up to five hours of playback, at $149 (169 euros).
Why it matters
By making ANC a default feature, Apple pushes its entry-level AirPods much closer to the Pro tier. For listeners who dislike silicone tips, the open-ear design is now one of the few noise-cancelling choices at this price point.
