The Noctalia Wayland desktop shell reached its first stable release on 3 September 2026 with version 5.0.1. After ten beta rounds, the milestone ends a months-long testing phase – and marks a clean break under the hood: the project has been rewritten from QML to native C++ with OpenGL ES.
Markedly lighter on memory
Noctalia ships the building blocks of a modern desktop: a bar, widgets, an app launcher, notifications, a control center and wallpaper management. The shell works with the Hyprland, Niri and Mango compositors, as well as the new Umbriel. The rewrite is meant to show above all in resource use: according to the project, memory consumption per monitor is roughly six times lower than in the QML predecessor.
New features from calendar to clipboard
Version 5 also grows functionally. Among the additions are:
- a calendar with local vdir accounts plus vdirsyncer and CalDAV support
- a “Most Recently Used” ordering mode in the window switcher
- per-application audio output routing and expanded media controls
- encrypted clipboard history and independent light/dark themes per app
On top of that come more than 50 bug fixes, covering Bluetooth pairing, fractional scaling and PipeWire. For protocol compatibility, Noctalia was updated to wayland-protocols 1.45. Anyone looking for a lean, highly customizable alternative to classic desktop environments now has a mature foundation in Noctalia 5.
