The KDE desktop is getting real long-term support again: KDE, Linux hardware vendor Kubuntu Focus and Techpaladin Software have announced a “bulletproof” KDE initiative. It guarantees at least three years of bug fixes and security updates for KDE Plasma 6.6 LTS and the associated KDE software.
A full software stack, not piecemeal
A key improvement over previous LTS attempts is the scope: it covers not just Plasma 6.6 but also KDE Frameworks 6.24 and KDE Gear 25.12, so nothing gets left behind. KDE had discontinued its earlier LTS variant in 2025 due to various problems – this is the restart with a “real” LTS channel.
Funded with over 100,000 dollars
This is made possible by concrete funding: over the next three years, Kubuntu Focus is committing more than 100,000 US dollars to Techpaladin Software, KDE e.V. and KDE developers. The maintenance is tied to Kubuntu 26.04 LTS, which is supported until 2029. For users who want a stable, long-lived KDE base without constant version changes, this is good news.
