The KDE desktop is completing its move to Wayland: Plasma 6.8 is due on 14 October 2026 as the first version without a dedicated X11 session at all. That ends the X11 era for KDE – Plasma 6.7 is the last version to still ship an X11 session.
The step is hardly a surprise: according to KDE, more than 95 percent of Plasma 6.6 users already run the Wayland session. X11 has been considered a legacy technology for years, while Wayland has become the default display server across the major Linux desktops – GNOME has already made the same move.
Right now: Plasma 6.7.4 with AMD and Wayland fixes
There is fresh maintenance for users of the current series: Plasma 6.7.4 was released on 4 August 2026. The fourth maintenance update to the 6.7 series bundles three weeks of bug fixes and translations. The focus is on the stability of the KWin window manager – including workarounds for libepoxy failures during GPU resets – as well as fixes for DRM issues that caused display corruption on AMD hardware. Wayland benefits from new protocol extensions and a password-free resume from sleep.
KDE users should install the update and prepare for Wayland-only operation from 6.8 onwards. For the vast majority of setups this is unproblematic; only a few X11-specific tools might need adjustments.
