The beta of GNOME 51 is here, giving a preview of the next version of the popular Linux desktop environment. The stable release is planned for mid-September 2026. The focus is on native background blur, accessibility improvements and a more modern login.
What’s new
- Native background blur: the Mutter compositor supports the new Wayland protocol
ext-background-effect-v1, which lets apps request a blurred background behind their windows. - Reduced motion: GNOME Shell now respects the reduced-motion setting and can hide animations on request.
- HDR improvements: HDR output now populates mastering-display metadata, plus fixes for low-contrast HDR displays.
- Web login: the Shell supports web-based authentication – handy for modern login methods.
On top of that come full support for SVG cursors and a new interface for managing fingerprints in Settings. Overall, GNOME 51 is a polish release with many smaller but sensible improvements. For most users they become visible once their distribution ships GNOME 51.
