Firefox is now the last major browser that fully supports the popular ad blocker uBlock Origin. After Google Chrome already restricted the blocker, Microsoft Edge is the next Chromium browser to follow suit – leaving Firefox as the only one still holding out.
The background is the extension standard Manifest V3. It replaces the previous webRequest interface, which ad blockers use to intercept and filter network requests, with the much more limited declarativeNetRequest. Full uBlock Origin can no longer run under it – on Chromium browsers, only the stripped-down “uBlock Origin Lite” remains.
Microsoft begins the end in Edge
On 7 August, Microsoft announced it would retire old Manifest V2 extensions for consumers in Edge, aiming to complete the transition by the end of 2026. Mozilla responded by making clear: “Our support for uBlock Origin isn’t going anywhere.” Firefox retains the necessary webRequestBlocking capability even under Manifest V3.
For users, this means: anyone who wants the full functionality of uBlock Origin is best served by Firefox – or by Brave, which also still supports it. On Chrome and Edge, only the limited Lite version remains.
