The Debian-based distribution SparkyLinux was released as version 8.4 on 10 August 2026 – the fourth quarterly update to the Sparky 8 “Seven Sisters” series built on Debian 13 “Trixie”. The most exciting change: SparkyLinux is bringing back official 32-bit images for older machines.
The return of 32-bit images
About a year ago, Sparky had stopped producing 32-bit editions after Debian scaled back its support. Now the project is reversing course: it became clear that many users still own working computers with 32-bit processors. SparkyLinux 8.4 therefore once again ships i686-pae live/install images – alongside the existing editions for 64-bit x86 and ARM64.
Kernel and editions
- Default kernel: Linux 6.12 LTS on the live system; Linux 7.1.8 and 6.18 LTS are also supported (ARM64 with 6.18 LTS, 32-bit with 6.12 LTS).
- Base: Debian 13 “Trixie”.
- Editions: amd64 with Xfce, LXQt, MATE, KDE Plasma plus MinimalGUI/CLI; ARM64 with Openbox and CLI; i686-pae as MinimalGUI/CLI.
With this, Sparky once again positions itself as a lightweight, resource-friendly alternative – especially for hardware the major distributions wrote off long ago. Anyone looking to revive an old laptop or PC will find a current, maintained foundation here.
