TUXEDO OS is leaving Ubuntu behind: Linux hardware maker TUXEDO Computers will base its in-house operating system on Debian Testing from now on. An open beta has been available for testing since 16 August 2026.
“Continuous Debian” instead of Ubuntu LTS
Rather than stable Debian, TUXEDO is permanently tracking Debian Testing – a continuously updated model the company calls “Continuous Debian.” As reasons, TUXEDO cites that libraries in the aging Ubuntu LTS base were often too old for newer software, and that it wants greater independence from Canonical’s growing focus on the Snap package format.
Desktop and tech
The desktop environment remains KDE Plasma (Plasma 6.7.2 with Qt 6.10.2 in the beta) on Wayland. New is Btrfs as the default filesystem with automatic system snapshots via Snapper – including rollback if an update fails.
Switching requires a clean install
Important for existing users: current Ubuntu-based TUXEDO OS installations cannot be safely upgraded to the Debian base. Making the switch requires a clean installation.
