COSMIC 1.6: System76 Desktop Gets Per-App Audio

System76 has released version 1.6 (Epoch 1.6.0) of its Rust-based desktop environment COSMIC – a coordinated update across the entire component stack. The focus is on Wayland, audio and polish.

What’s new

  • Modern Wayland protocols: the smithay-based compositor supports current Wayland protocols.
  • Per-app audio routing: audio output can now be controlled per application in Settings.
  • HiDPI fix: the previously jagged text rendering on high-resolution displays has been fixed.

There are also important bug fixes: a dialog loop in the file manager that could freeze the session has been removed, and a debounced volume slider stops audio stuttering. Pop!_OS users receive the update through regular system updates – COSMIC continues its march from prototype to daily-driver desktop.
