Music streaming service Spotify is introducing a new setting allowing users to filter children’s and family music out of their personalized recommendation algorithm. The rollout of this feature has begun, catering to account holders whose listening habits are frequently disrupted by kids’ songs or animated movie soundtracks.
Saving Discover Weekly and Spotify Wrapped
Previously, every played track contributed equally to the so-called Taste Profile—the data foundation Spotify uses to generate automated playlists like Discover Weekly and daily mixes. For parents, this regularly led to children’s songs dominating their annual Spotify Wrapped, displacing their actual favorite artists.
With this new toggle, kids and family content will no longer factor into future music recommendations. According to Spotify, this category includes soundtracks from well-known cartoons and animated movies, theme songs from family TV shows, and traditional nursery rhymes. Playback itself remains completely unaffected: users can still search for, stream, and organize these tracks into their own playlists as usual. Streams simply won’t be calculated into future recommendations anymore.
A major benefit for existing users: the change applies retroactively. Even if numerous children’s songs were streamed over recent months, disabling the setting ensures they will not be counted as top tracks or top artists in upcoming year-end recaps.
How to Enable the Setting
The new feature can be configured directly in the Spotify app’s settings. The corresponding toggle is located via the following path:
- Open Settings and privacy in the app.
- Select Content and display.
- Turn off the toggle that includes children’s and family music in your Taste Profile.
An Advantage Over the Competition
As 9to5mac reports, Spotify is addressing a longstanding issue common across many streaming platforms. Competitor Apple Music currently lacks a native, dedicated toggle for kids’ content. There, users must rely on iOS Focus filters as a workaround to manually pause listening history—an extra step that is easily forgotten in daily life. Anyone using Spotify who shares an account with children should check the new option in their settings and enable it if needed.
