Google has unveiled its new AI models, Gemini 3.8 Live and Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking. The systems are designed specifically for fluid voice conversations and aim to support users with complex tasks in everyday applications such as Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Keep directly via voice input.
Multi-step tasks without conversational pauses
According to the manufacturer, Gemini 3.8 Live Extended Thinking stands out for its ability to think and speak simultaneously. Previously, voice assistants often had to fully process queries before generating a response. The new model maintains the flow of conversation by interjecting interim updates like “Let me check that real quick” and verbally guiding users through multi-step background processes.
This feature is being deployed in Gmail Live for conversational email searches, in Docs Live for drafting and revising texts, and in Keep Live for note-taking. Furthermore, the rollout of the model for Gemini Live begins immediately.
Results in audio and agent benchmarks
Extended Thinking posted top scores in standardized benchmarks: It secured first place on Artificial Analysis’ Speech to Speech Quality Index with 82.6 points. When handling agentic tasks, it achieved 68.6 percent on the τ-Voice benchmark and 35.1 percent on the finance-specific τ-Voice Banking test. In Big Bench Audio, the architecture reached 97.7 percent for logical reasoning.
Base model supports 97 languages
Alongside the extended thinking version, the standard base model Gemini 3.8 Live is also launching. It processes visual inputs in near real-time and executes tool or interface calls (APIs) in the background while the dialogue continues. The system can dynamically switch between 97 languages mid-conversation and will serve as the foundation for the upcoming “Search Live” format in Google’s AI mode.

For users, the update primarily translates to reduced wait times during complex voice queries. Rather than rigid question-and-answer patterns, interactions now more closely resemble a natural collaborative dialogue. Integration into Gmail and Keep makes it possible to manage workflows hands-free.
