The Wine project released the development build Wine 11.17 on September 4, 2026. The compatibility layer lets Windows programs run on Linux, macOS and BSD. The standout of this release is an initial, still experimental display mode emulation, alongside the updated Direct3D library VKD3D 2.1 and 44 bug fixes.
Virtualising the resolution
The centrepiece of Wine 11.17 is initial support for display mode emulation. Instead of physically switching the screen resolution, Wine now renders into the virtual size a program expects and then scales the result via OpenGL onto the real host window. This form of rendering virtualisation is meant to stabilise older games that would otherwise reset the whole desktop resolution on their own. The feature is still at an early stage and is expected to expand in coming releases.
VKD3D 2.1 and many bug fixes
The bundled VKD3D library, which translates Direct3D 12 calls into Vulkan, moves up to version 2.1. Wine also improves handling of preferred UI languages, so Windows applications adopt the configured language more reliably. In total the release clears 44 reported bugs.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Vice City
- Dragon Age: Inquisition
- Ground Control and Marathon
- Horizon Chase Turbo
Wine 11.17 is a development build; the next stable series, Wine 12.0, is expected in early 2027.
