The free video editor Kdenlive was released as version 26.08.0 on 31 August 2026. The KDE team put stability first and squashed eleven crashes, while also handing the timeline several long-requested convenience features.
New order in the timeline
Anyone who wrestled with a fixed track order can now reorder tracks freely – including by dragging with the mouse, with paired video and audio tracks staying together as they move. If a clip needs an audio track that does not exist yet, Kdenlive creates one automatically. Holding Alt while dragging snaps the playhead to clip edges, guides, markers and zones.
Further additions include:
- additive soloing via Shift+Click in the audio mixer
- speed changes applied to several clips at once
- markers placed at gaps between clips
- configurable colors for video, audio, title and image clips
Title editor and effects improved
The title editor gains snapping for precise placement, rounded corners with a draggable radius, and copy-and-paste of individual elements. Effect values now accept math expressions, the Transform effect gets a movable rotation anchor, and image sequences support the WebP format. Notably, many of the changes came from new contributors – a sign of the growing community behind the open-source editor.
Kdenlive 26.08.0 is available for Linux (AppImage and Flatpak), Windows and macOS. Users of rolling distributions receive the update through their package repositories.
