Arch Linux opens September with a fresh installation image: the 2026.09.01 ISO is the first to ship Linux kernel 7.2 by default. The project jumps from the 7.1 series to the new generation, promising better detection of recent hardware during installation.
The Jump to Kernel 7.2
At the heart of the new image is Linux 7.2.2, up from 7.1.5 in the previous release. According to Linuxiac, this is the first Arch ISO to carry the 7.2 kernel series. The benefit shows mainly on first contact: a newer kernel recognizes fresh chips, network adapters and storage controllers more reliably, smoothing installs on recent hardware. It is paired with the August 10 firmware bundle, covering drivers for AMD, Intel, NVIDIA, Realtek, Qualcomm, Broadcom and MediaTek.

Who Should Download It
Because Arch Linux is a rolling release, existing systems do not need the ISO. A regular pacman -Syu keeps a running install at the same package state anyway. The monthly image is therefore aimed mainly at fresh installations – and at anyone who wants an up-to-date rescue or live medium on hand.
