The Debian project is putting the handling of AI-assisted contributions to a fundamental vote among its developers. The General Resolution runs from 15 to 28 August 2026. Five competing proposals are on the ballot – ranging from a hard ban to a permissive framework.
Only registered Debian Developers may vote, using ranked voting: they order the options by preference. A result will therefore not be known until after 28 August.
The range of proposals
- Ban: one proposal would forbid any contributions created with LLMs or other generative AI – covering source packages, all Debian software, web resources, documentation, translations and official communication.
- Permissive framework: another proposal would accept AI-assisted work provided it follows the Debian Free Software Guidelines, is understood and reviewed by the contributor, and is marked as AI-assisted where needed.
At its core, two views collide: concern about overloading volunteer reviewers and unresolved copyright questions on one side – and the practical reality that many maintainers already use AI day to day on the other. The decision is seen as setting a direction far beyond Debian itself.
