Satellite internet service Starlink is apparently preparing time-limited access for users. A new program is set to offer hourly, daily, and weekly passes without requiring customers to commit to an ongoing monthly subscription.
Booking satellite internet by the hour or day
Until now, the SpaceX-operated service Starlink has required end users to purchase their own satellite dish and router and pay for an ongoing contract. For casual users or those on a tighter budget, the hardware and subscription costs pose a barrier.
With the planned offering under a so-called “Community” program, the company is softening this model. Moving forward, users will be able to flexibly purchase time allowances. Access is planned for individual hours, days, or entire weeks. The model is aimed particularly at people who do not need their own permanent Starlink connection or cannot afford the standard costs.
“Starlink for communities” relies on local operators
Implementation is set to take place through the “Starlink for communities” format. On a dedicated website, SpaceX is already looking for so-called hosts. These are local operators or hosts whose infrastructure will be used to provide network access. SpaceX appears to be gradually building a network of partners and resellers.
Technical and administrative handling will remain centralized with the provider: according to the company, Starlink itself will take care of payments, user access authorization, and the provision of the actual internet connection. Hosts will therefore not need to set up their own billing systems.
Availability and next steps
Specific pricing for the individual time quotas, as well as launch dates and regional availability, are currently not yet known. Anyone who relies on temporary satellite internet or could be eligible as a host should wait for official announcements from Starlink once details on locations and plan models are released.
