GNOME 51 Reaches Release Candidate: Wayland Blur and Cross-GPU Scan-Out Before the Finale

GNOME 51 “A Coruña” reached its Release Candidate on September 2, 2026 – the final test stage before the stable edition due on September 16. Both the compositor and the Shell still receive noticeable polish.

Cross-GPU scan-out and blur in the compositor

The Mutter 51.rc window manager adds support for cross-GPU buffer scan-out, complete with an automatic test – a boost mainly for hybrid laptops that carry two graphics chips. There is also a new policy for the Wayland blur introduced back in the beta: by default the effect runs at a 24-pixel radius. On top of that come Night Light support for hardware without GAMMA_LUT, configurable stylus eraser buttons, and hardware cursors for SVG pointers.

Glycin brings Rust into the Shell

GNOME Shell 51.rc now relies on the Rust-written Glycin library for loading and caching background images. The release also lands fixes for direct scan-out plus numerous plugged memory leaks and crash fixes across the stack.

Road to September 16

With the RC, the UI, feature and API freezes take hold: only bug fixes flow in until the launch. The beta had already laid the groundwork for web-based sign-in on the login screen, respect for the reduced-motion setting, and full SVG cursor support. The stable 51.0 release is expected on September 16, 2026 and will then make its way into distributions such as Fedora 44 and Ubuntu.
