System76 released COSMIC 1.7 on 25 August 2026 – the latest stable version of its fully Rust-based, open-source desktop environment. Arriving just one week after version 1.6, the update is deliberately modest: a pure polish-and-maintenance release rather than a feature milestone.
What changes in the compositor
The most visible improvements live in the COSMIC Compositor. Scalable cursors now stay sharp instead of turning blurry when enlarged, zoom can be increased in finer steps with each keypress, and shaking the mouse pointer temporarily magnifies it – a comfort and accessibility feature other desktops have long offered. The screen also activates automatically again when the machine is unlocked.
Files, editor and login
COSMIC Files now lets you rename the Favorites pane, aligns file names more cleanly in grid view and can navigate to a network location from anywhere – browsing network shares should feel noticeably faster. COSMIC Edit only switches tabs when one is closed and disables Cut and Copy while nothing is selected. The COSMIC Greeter will now let a login continue even when PAM returns a non-fatal error message.
A young desktop finding its rhythm
COSMIC is still young: the from-scratch rebuild replaces System76’s earlier GNOME-based approach in Pop!_OS and first shipped in a stable distribution with Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS in December 2025. The rapid cadence of small releases shows System76 is now focused chiefly on stability and detail work.
