Anthropic has reportedly secured about $35 billion worth of cloud capacity from Nvidia-backed GPU provider Lambda, according to the Wall Street Journal. Reuters and Bloomberg confirmed the figure citing people familiar with the matter – neither Anthropic nor Lambda has officially announced the deal.
What is known about the deal
The arrangement is intended to bring Nvidia compute online for Anthropic’s Claude models. The reported site is operator Hut 8’s Beacon Point campus in Nueces County, Texas. According to the reports, Nvidia holds the lease on the facility, while Lambda supplies the capacity to Anthropic and fills the campus with Nvidia chips it procures itself. Specifics on the contract term, chip count, actual compute capacity and payment schedule have not been disclosed so far; some reports mention a multi-year commitment, though this is not officially confirmed.
Context: Anthropic’s appetite for compute
The agreement is part of a run of capacity contracts through which Anthropic is addressing a compute shortage that emerged as demand for Claude surged. In late August the company reported a $45 billion, six-year deal with Nscale, another Nvidia-backed provider. On top of that come a contract worth more than $100 billion with Amazon Web Services and partnerships with Google. According to market observers, Anthropic has amassed compute commitments in the hundreds of billions within a few months – obligations tied to projected future revenue growth.
Open questions
Because both companies are staying silent, it remains unclear how the contractual obligations are split among Anthropic, Lambda, Nvidia and Hut 8, and when the capacity will come online. On August 27, Lambda reported $926 million in financing for GPU infrastructure serving an unnamed large customer – contextually likely Anthropic.
