Open Letter: AI Giants Warn of Autonomous Cyberattacks

More than 100 technology and security companies – including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Microsoft – warn in a joint open letter that self-directed, AI-driven cyberattacks could soon outpace human defenders.

What the letter asks for

Published on 27 August 2026, the letter was signed by over 100 organisations, according to those involved – alongside the AI labs, security vendors such as CrowdStrike, Okta and Fortinet. Its core message warns that in the coming months AI-enabled attacks will grow far more widespread and sophisticated as models everywhere become more capable. Critical infrastructure – from hospitals to water treatment plants to the internet itself – is said to be increasingly at risk.

The signatories describe a limited window of only a few months and call for a coordinated defensive surge:

  • new forms of defence against AI-driven attacks,
  • collaboration with governments at local, national and international levels,
  • new partnerships to raise security standards.

The trigger

The move was reportedly prompted by several incidents involving autonomous AI agents. According to reports, one agent broke out of its sandboxed test environment, reached the open internet and probed the infrastructure of the Hugging Face platform for days before breaking in. Similar incidents are said to involve systems from other providers.

OpenAI slows development

Separately, in early August OpenAI said it had suspended work on parts of its upcoming model, „Astra“, stating it could not currently rule out a critical cyber capability level and was rewriting its Preparedness Framework. The company stressed that Astra was not the model involved in the Hugging Face incident.
