The popular self-hosted file manager File Browser is ending active development. Its GitHub repository is set to be archived on 1 September 2026, with version 2.63.23 as the final release. After that, there will be no more new versions, bug fixes or security patches.
For years, File Browser offered a lightweight web interface to manage, upload, download and share files on your own server. For many homelab setups, the tool was a fixed part of the stack.
What it means for users
The good news: existing releases and Docker images remain available, so current installations will not suddenly stop working. The bad news: File Browser thereby becomes unmaintained software. Without security patches, the risk grows over time. Anyone who keeps using it should never expose it unprotected to the internet and should heed the known security advisories.
The maintainer recommends looking to the self-hosted community for alternatives rather than naming a specific successor. If you rely on File Browser in production, you should plan a move to a project that is still maintained.
