Volkswagen is expanding its electric lineup and bringing the GTI label to the ID.3. The vehicle succeeds the previous ID.3 GTX Performance, but takes no new leaps in terms of powertrain output. Orders are scheduled to open in early 2027.
Known Powertrain Technology Without a Power Boost
Beneath the sheet metal sits the familiar electric motor with the internal designation APP550. Like the previous flagship model, the ID.3 GTI delivers a maximum output of 240 kW. While this noticeably sets the vehicle apart from the regular model variants with a maximum of 170 kW, there is no performance increase over its predecessor. According to manufacturer specs, the compact car accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 200 km/h, whereas standard versions are capped at 160 km/h.
Power is supplied by a battery with a capacity of 79 kWh. At suitable fast-charging stations, the pack can be charged at up to 183 kW. The manufacturer states a charging time of 29 minutes from 10 to 80 percent state of charge, which corresponds to an average charging power of around 114 kW. The preliminary WLTP consumption figure is 14.5 kWh per 100 kilometers, resulting in a calculated range of up to 601 kilometers. Final homologation figures are still pending.
Differentiation Through Design and Soundscapes
Since electric cars deliver their full torque from zero rpm, tangible differentiation purely through additional motor output is harder to achieve than with combustion engines. Volkswagen is therefore focusing on visual cues for the ID.3 GTI. Inside, sports seats feature the signature tartan pattern, complemented by model-specific graphics in the digital instrument cluster. Upon request, an artificial combustion engine sound can also be activated.
On the exterior, the model is distinguished by modified plastic trim elements at the front and rear, a lowered suspension, and a red connecting strip between the standard matrix headlights. The 20-inch wheels bear the name “Wörthersee” – a nod to the former enthusiast meet. Available paint finishes include gray, silver, white, black, and a red tone meant to replicate the Tornado Red of the original GTI.
Market Launch and Price Estimate
Volkswagen has not yet announced prices for the sporty model. A realistic starting price is in the region of around 50,000 euros, which is likely to climb higher with optional extras such as a head-up display or panoramic roof. The exact timeline for the first deliveries following the order launch in early 2027 also remains open. Interested buyers will have to wait until final specifications and the official price list are released.
