Chip giant Nvidia is reportedly close to acquiring the open-source AI platform Hugging Face for around $12.9 billion. The deal is not officially confirmed – and the sources disagree on the details.
What the deal would mean
Hugging Face is the leading platform for sharing and working with open-source AI models. Under Nvidia’s ownership, the company would extend its reach deep into the software and model ecosystem – a strategic move as open-source models race to catch up with the closed systems from OpenAI and Anthropic.
Valuation and current status
According to The Information, the purchase has already been finalized at $12.9 billion; other outlets such as CNBC and Forbes describe an agreement “according to reports.” Bloomberg and Business Insider, by contrast, stress that no signed agreement exists yet – and the deal could still fall apart.
The sum would be a sharp jump: in the 2023 Series D round, which Nvidia itself took part in, Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion.
