Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for Over 7 Billion

As Bloomberg reports, payment provider Stripe has finalised the acquisition of AI startup OpenRouter for more than 7 billion US dollars (as of 16 August 2026). With the purchase, Stripe secures a central routing layer between applications and AI models.

OpenRouter sees itself as a kind of “Stripe for AI”: a single access point through which developers can reach hundreds of AI models and switch flexibly between them. This avoids dependence on any single provider – an advantage that businesses in particular value.

A billion-dollar price with a discount

The valuation is notable: only a few months ago, OpenRouter closed a Series B round of 113 million dollars at a valuation of around 1.3 billion dollars. Initial talks reportedly priced the deal near 10 billion dollars; falling model prices in the summer of 2026, however, pushed the final figure down by roughly 30 percent.

Stripe was already OpenRouter’s payment processor – the existing partnership now turns into ownership of the routing layer. The deal underlines how central the infrastructure between apps and AI models has become to the business of artificial intelligence.
