Tesla Discontinues Its Solar Roof – After Almost Ten Years

Tesla is burying its solar roof: the company has told installers it will only supply conventional solar panels from now on. Internally, the “Solar Roof” tile product is considered not financially viable – after almost ten years on the market.

The end of the solar tiles

Tesla is no longer supplying the Solar Roof and is focusing entirely on conventional solar panels. The former Solar Roof page now redirects to the solar panels page, and “Solar Roof” has disappeared from the website’s Energy menu.

An ambitious project ends

Elon Musk unveiled the solar roof in October 2016 on a Hollywood back lot; weeks later, Tesla shareholders approved the roughly $2.6 billion acquisition of SolarCity. Tesla had already stopped reporting solar roof installation figures in early 2024, and the product had all but vanished from its marketing.

Solar stays – just differently

Tesla is not abandoning the solar business entirely, though: it will continue to supply conventional solar panels.
