How the PoE power budget calculator works
Power over Ethernet (PoE) powers devices such as access points, IP cameras and VoIP phones over the network cable. But every switch has a limited total power budget. The calculator shows whether your devices fit and how much headroom remains.
- PoE budget: The total budget is in the switch datasheet (e.g. 370 W). It is usually lower than the sum of all per-port maxima.
- PoE standard: 802.3af delivers up to 15.4 W, 802.3at (PoE+) 30 W, 802.3bt up to 60 W (Type 3) or 90 W (Type 4) per port at the switch.
- Power per device: Real draw is often lower than the standard maximum – use the value from the end device's datasheet.
Tip: Plan 10–20% headroom. Access points draw noticeably more under load (many clients, Wi-Fi 7) than when idle, and some switches throttle individual ports when the budget is exceeded.
