Understanding and converting Unix timestamps
A Unix timestamp counts the seconds since 1 January 1970 (UTC) – the “epoch”. It shows up everywhere: in logs, JWTs, databases and APIs. The converter works both ways and automatically detects whether you enter seconds or milliseconds.
- Timestamp → date: Enter the value; the tool shows UTC (ISO 8601) and your local time. Values with 13+ digits are interpreted as milliseconds.
- Date → timestamp: Pick a date and time; you get the timestamp in seconds and milliseconds.
- Live display: The current Unix timestamp ticks along at the top, second by second.
Note: the calculation uses your browser’s time zone for local time. The seconds value is time-zone independent because it always refers to UTC.
