Matter & Thread in Home Assistant

Matter is the common language of smart home devices: a device certified for it works with Home Assistant as well as with Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa – locally, without a cloud of its maker. It talks over Wi-Fi, Ethernet or Thread, a low-power mesh radio that needs a border router. Here you find every device the CSA has certified, what Home Assistant needs for it, and which Matter version they speak.

What Home Assistant needs for Matter

  1. Matter integration Home Assistant talks Matter through the Matter server. On Home Assistant OS the integration installs it as an add-on; other installations run it as a container of its own.
  2. A Thread border router Only for Thread devices: it connects the Thread mesh with your network. Home Assistant Connect ZBT-2 or Yellow with the OpenThread Border Router add-on do the job – or one you already own, such as a HomePod mini, an Apple TV 4K or a Nest Hub (2nd generation). Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices need none.
  3. The Home Assistant app for pairing A new device is paired with the app on your phone over Bluetooth, using the QR code or the setup code printed on it. A device already in Apple Home, Google Home or Alexa can be shared with Home Assistant as a second controller.
  4. IPv6 and one network Matter relies on IPv6 and on devices finding each other in the local network. Keep IPv6 enabled on the router and keep Home Assistant and the devices in the same network, or forward mDNS between separate ones.

Certified devices by type and radio

A device certified for several radios counts in each column. Every number leads to the devices in the list.

Matter versions

The newest version a device was certified for. Newer versions bring more device types – such as energy management in 1.3 and cameras in 1.5 – but Home Assistant only offers what its Matter server supports so far.

Thread border routers and hubs with Thread

Devices certified as a Thread border router, and Matter hubs certified with a Thread radio, newest first. Whether a hub lets other devices use its Thread network is up to its maker – check before buying. Many speakers, displays and Wi-Fi routers act as a border router without a certificate of their own.

All Matter devices

Source: the Distributed Compliance Ledger of the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) – only devices whose certification is valid. Brand, model, device type, radios, Matter version and date are taken from it. A certificate says the device follows the standard; how completely Home Assistant supports a device type depends on its Matter server.
